4. What IP matters do you assist clients with the most?
Drafting patent applications and prosecuting applications at the USPTO.
5. What are the biggest challenges facing your client’s industry?
Subject matter eligibility for software inventions under 35 U.S.C. 101 and US Supreme Court case law (Mayo, Alice decisions).
6. What trends are you seeing in your client’s industry?
The Alice decision has had an impact across all clients. Some clients have pared back application filings. Others have had trouble licensing patents.
7. What excites you most about working with clients in this industry?
I’m able to combine my legal and technical knowledge to assist clients.
8. How has IP work changed since you first started practicing?
The Mayo/Alice decisions really shook up the software patent landscape. We have developed new strategies for drafting and prosecuting patent applications in light of these changes.
9. What is your favorite aspect of your practice?
Learning about new technologies daily.
10. What do you enjoy most about working at KDW?
Working with sophisticated clients and colleagues.
11. What activities do you enjoy when you’re not at work?
UNC basketball, sports, exercise, staying active in the legal/tech community, visiting family in Greece in the summer.
